Ruffed Grouse

Rock Ptarmigan

White-tailed Ptarmigan

Sooty Grouse

These chunky forest birds are often well camouflaged and hard to spot.  During breeding season males can be heard making drumming displays with their wings, creating deep, low-pitched thumping calls.

Four species of grouse have been detected on the Sunshine Coast.  Of these, the Sooty Grouse and Ruffed Grouse are most common, while the Rock Ptarmigan and White-tailed Ptarmigan are seen much less frequently.
